Honorary Doctorate (H.Doc)

Doctorate honoris causa – Official Evaluation & Award Process

Recognizing Outstanding Contributions Across All Fields

At StartYourPhD, we believe that extraordinary contributions to society, industry, science, arts, public service, business, and humanity deserve formal recognition. An Honorary Doctorate (H.Doc), also known as Doctorate honoris causa, is one of the highest honors an institution can bestow upon an individual who has made a lasting impact without necessarily following the traditional academic route.

Unlike "instant degree" websites that sell meaningless titles, we facilitate a credible, structured, and transparent evaluation process in partnership with recognized institutes and universities across the globe. Every candidate undergoes a genuine assessment by a Board of Studies before an H.Doc is awarded.

The Process

The Complete Evaluation & Award Process

We follow a five-stage, rigorous process designed to protect the integrity of the honorary title.

1
Stage 1
Profile Submission & Preliminary Review

You begin by submitting your professional profile through the form on this page. The following documents and information are required

  • Full name and contact details
  • Nationality
  • Your most updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting career timeline, roles, responsibilities, and achievements
  • Area of Expertise – choose the domain for which you seek recognition (e.g., Business Leadership, Medical Research, Education Reform, Social Work, Environmental Science, etc.)
  • A summary of major awards, honours, fellowships, or recognitions received to date
  • Academic background (optional but recommended)
  • Any media coverage, testimonials, or evidence of impact (optional but strengthens your case)
Our internal team conducts an initial eligibility screening to ensure your profile meets the basic threshold for honorary consideration. This is not an approval – it is a filtering mechanism to save institutes' time.
2
Stage 2
Evaluation Submission Fee of $95

After your profile passes the initial screening, you will be directed to pay a non-refundable evaluation submission fee of $95 (USD). This fee covers

  • Administrative processing of your dossier
  • Secure transmission of your profile to one or more partner institutes
  • Coordination with the institute's evaluation committee
  • Scheduling of the interview (if shortlisted)
Why is this fee non-refundable?
Because even if your candidature is later declined by the Board, significant administrative work has already been performed — document verification, expert review, and institute liaison.
3
Stage 3
Forwarding to Institute & Shortlisting

Your complete profile (CV, achievements, expertise, and supporting documents) is forwarded to a recognized institute or university that has an active Honorary Doctorate program. The institute's internal committee reviews your submission against their criteria, which typically include

  • Originality and significance of contributions
  • Duration and consistency of impact
  • Recognition by peers or authorities
  • Alignment with the institute's academic or social values
If shortlisted, you will receive an official communication inviting you to the next stage. If not shortlisted, the process ends here with no further charges.
4
Stage 4 — Critical
Evaluation Interview with the Board of Studies

This is the most critical stage. Shortlisted candidates are required to appear before the Board of Studies (or Honorary Degrees Committee) of the respective institute. The interview can be conducted

  • Online (via Zoom, Teams, or similar platform)
  • In-person (if the candidate is geographically close or visiting)

During the interview, board members will

  • Ask detailed questions about your career trajectory
  • Verify claims made in your CV and profile
  • Assess the authenticity of awards and achievements mentioned
  • Understand your motivation for seeking an Honorary Doctorate
  • Evaluate the broader impact of your work on society, industry, or academia
Important This is not a formality. The Board has the full authority to approve, defer, or reject your candidature based on the interview. We do not influence their decision.
5
Stage 5 — Final
Approval & Award of Honorary Doctorate

If the Board of Studies approves your candidature, you will receive

  • An official approval letter from the institute
  • A formal citation detailing the specific achievements for which the H.Doc is conferred
  • Instructions for the award ceremony (physical or virtual)
  • An invoice for the remaining award fee of $1,400

Upon payment of the $1,400, the institute will

  • Issue your Honorary Doctorate certificate on official parchment with institutional seals and signatures
  • Enter your name in the institute's honorary degree register
  • Ship the certificate to your mailing address (courier included)
  • Conduct a formal conferral ceremony (depending on institute policy and your location)
Your H.Doc title can thereafter be used as Dr. h.c. (honoris causa) in your professional biography, email signature, social media, press releases, and official communications (subject to local laws).

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Clear, honest answers about the Honorary Doctorate process.

1 What exactly is an Honorary Doctorate? Is it a real degree? +
It is a prestigious honorary title awarded by universities and institutes to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to a field, society, or humanity. It does not require coursework, research, or thesis submission. However, it is a legally and socially recognized honour that can be used in professional contexts, except where specific academic credentials are required (e.g., licensed medical practice).
2 Do I need a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD to apply? +
No. Honorary Doctorates are based on real-world achievements, not formal education. Many recipients have no university degree but possess decades of proven impact. However, if you have academic qualifications, including them strengthens your profile.
3 Why is there an evaluation interview? Can't you just award it directly? +
The interview ensures credibility and legitimacy. Genuine honorary degrees are never sold or given without scrutiny. The Board of Studies must verify your claims, understand your contributions firsthand, and ensure that the institution's reputation is upheld. Without an interview, the title would be meaningless. This process separates us from diploma mills.
4 What happens if the Board rejects me after the interview? +
If the Board of Studies does not approve your candidature, you will not be asked to pay the $1,400 award fee. The process ends. The $95 evaluation fee is non-refundable because administrative work (screening, forwarding, scheduling, institute liaison) has already been performed.
5 Which institutes or universities do you work with? +
We maintain partnerships with multiple recognized institutes, universities, and educational foundations across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. All partner institutions have existing honorary degree policies and legitimate accreditation or recognition in their respective countries. Due to confidentiality agreements, the specific institute name is disclosed only to shortlisted candidates.
6 Can I choose which institute evaluates my profile? +
You may express a preference (e.g., European institute, online-friendly board, etc.), but the final institute is determined based on your area of expertise, nationality, language, and availability of the Board. We match you with the most appropriate institute to maximize your chances of approval.
7 Is the $1,400 fee refundable if I change my mind after approval? +
No. Once the Board approves your H.Doc and you choose to proceed, the $1,400 award fee becomes payable. This fee covers certificate production, official seals, courier, ceremony arrangements, and administrative processing. If you decide not to pay, the approval will lapse, and no certificate will be issued. No refund is applicable once payment is made.
8 How long does the entire process take from submission to award? +
Typical timeline Initial screening & fee payment 2–3 business days; Forwarding to institute & shortlisting 1–2 weeks; Interview scheduling & conduct 1–3 weeks; Board decision 1–2 weeks after interview; Certificate preparation & shipping 2–4 weeks after fee payment. Total 6 to 12 weeks on average, depending on institute schedules.
9 Will the H.Doc certificate mention my area of expertise? +
Yes. The certificate will clearly state the specific domain for which the honour is conferred. Example "Honorary Doctorate in Global Business Leadership" or "Doctorate honoris causa in Humanitarian Service."
10 Can I use "Dr." before my name after receiving an H.Doc? +
In many countries, it is socially and professionally acceptable to use "Dr." in non-clinical, non-licensing contexts. However, using "Dr." in a medical or academic teaching capacity where an earned PhD or MD is legally required may be prohibited.
11 Is the H.Doc recognized internationally? +
Respect for honorary doctorates varies by country and institution. Generally, it is recognized as an honorary title, not an academic qualification. Many governments, corporations, and NGOs honour it as a mark of distinction. However, it does not qualify you for university faculty positions requiring earned doctorates, nor does it grant clinical rights.
12 What if I already have an Honorary Doctorate from elsewhere? +
You can still apply. Additional recognition never diminishes your achievements. However, the evaluation process remains the same – past honorary degrees do not guarantee approval.
13 Do you guarantee approval if I pay the $95 fee? +
Absolutely not. No legitimate service can guarantee approval of an honorary doctorate. Only the Board of Studies can approve. We guarantee a fair, transparent evaluation by a real academic board. If anyone promises guaranteed approval, they are selling a fake diploma.
14 Can organizations nominate someone for an Honorary Doctorate? +
Yes. CEOs, HR departments, professional associations, or family members can nominate a candidate using the same form. The nominee will still have to go through the full evaluation process, including the interview.
15 Will I receive a physical certificate and ceremony? +
Yes, upon full approval and payment of the $1,400 award fee, you will receive a physical, embossed certificate on official parchment; institutional seals and authorized signatures; optional virtual ceremony (or in-person where feasible); and a digital copy for immediate use.
